AFI is a research institute that operates forestry and environmental research projects, international training programs, and hosts international events aimed at fostering international cooperation in forestry. The institute’s areas of expertise include the following:
International Cooperation
Conducting projects in various fields such as climate change, biodiversity conservation, and increasing local community income
Government Research Projects
Executing commissioned research projects for forestry government agencies such as the Korea Forest Service, the National Institute of Forest Science, and the Korea National Arboretum.
International Organization Collaborations
Carrying out research commissioned by international forestry organizations, such as the Asian Forest Cooperation Organization (AFoCO)
Desertification Prevention
Operating training programs for graduate students focused on desertification prevention in arid and semi-arid regions including Thailand, Myanmar, Tunisia, and Ethiopia
Biodiversity Conservation
Running biodiversity conservation training programs for researchers from ASEAN countries, including Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia.
Mangrove Restoration and Agroforestry
Implementing mangrove restoration and agroforestry projects to combat deforestation, boost carbon sequestration, and support sustainable livelihoods.
International Events
Hosting and participating in various international forestry and environmental events. The institute is involved in official events organized by international bodies such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP), IUFRO, APAFRI, and AFoCO.
